Why is everyone looking at me?
“You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do.”
Imagine… you go out with your friends to meet and then suddenly, you feel everyone is looking at the way you sit, stand, eat, drink or even talk. You feel like there are a lot of people and you need some space from them all. You feel the urge to go back and be on your own rather than with people. You start to stutter while ordering your food and you suddenly feel your heartbeat getting faster even when someone tries to approach you. Some of these feelings might have been familiar, right? Ever wondered why? Well, social anxiety symptoms are as simple and as complicated as this.
According to certain therapy types, various methods seem helpful under the supervision of a mental health professional in a guided environment. It is very helpful to have exposure techniques, where a hierarchy is formed from the least fearful situation to the highest and it is performed one after another by the individual to help improve the ability to be comfortable in social situations. It is also done by adding certain relaxation and grounding techniques that help in maintaining the calm of the individual in emotionally intense situations. It is done in a guided manner to maintain stability and avoid the collapse of emotions.
It can be done by an individual but having a mental health professional helps to maintain equilibrium of emotions and prevent crumbling. It is recommended to take professional help if these situations are affecting daily life and its various aspects. It should be kept in mind that there are also support groups where these things can be discussed and it helps to bring about a change and makes you feel validated that you are not alone in this. Help is available and even support exists. Even if it doesn't always feel like this, there are people who will not notice the mess ups or even the stain on the shirt or even stutter. To err is human.
NOTE - These are certain signs and symptoms which may vary person to person and need not to be used for self diagnosis. Diagnosis can only be given by professionals in the field of Psychology. These points are for information purposes only.
