Why can’t you understand me?

"Communication without comprehension is like clapping with one hand"

There are so many instances where you somehow take all of your energy and communicate but then you still somehow cannot figure things out or solve the issues. And then you feel that what could be missing? Well, turns out communication is the key but comprehension is the lock to that key. We cannot just say anything and expect the other person to understand. It should also be understood and reflected upon by the other person, then only it will lead to fruitful results. Otherwise, it's just talking to walls. But how does one know how to communicate better? Let’s find out.

Communication requires comprehension on the part of the receiver to understand the message. Comprehension is important for how we learn and retain information. The following tips can help you understand and communicate in relationships more effectively:

- Engage in active listening by focusing on your speaking companion.

- Listen not to answer, but to understand.

- Be aware of signs that are given by body language.

- Acknowledge and respect your partner's feelings and ideas.

- Be open to compromise and input.

- Clearly define your boundaries.

- Get ready for tough talks on both sides.

- Remain composed and show respect.

- Establish a target or reach a consensus.

- Have mutual accountability.

- Practice being non-judgmental.

- Think before you speak.

- Determine the underlying problem.

- Schedule a conversation time.

- It won't take one talk to make everything right.

- Be succinct but precise.

- Put things in writing.

It might seem like conversations can be too much sometimes, then ask for a break and some space. It can go a long way if we communicate and try to build a healthy relationship with others. And something as simple as trying to understand what the other person requires can save one from misunderstandings. I hope this helps!
